Biplab Majumdar, an Indo-English poet of international repute, author of more than 100 books, recipients of 02 Honorary D.Litt.s [ WAAC (UNESCO) and IWA, USA] and 01 Honorary KNIGHT (Malta), is popularly known as Indian Coetzee (John M Coetzee) because what he writes as poetry, scholars /poets/critics write four times on his works.
Nearly 100 Research papers, 12 Books have been written on his 04 poetry collections(English). From the Governor of West Bengal to the President of India have appreciated his phenomenal genius in literature.

Biplab Majumdar was born in Kolkata on 10th January, 1966 in a very common Bengalee middle class family. He was the only son of Birendra Majumdar and Gita Majumdar. Both of them are dead now. He studied upto Class VIII at Behala Sikshayatan, Kolkata and then passed Higher Secondary Examination from Nabakrishna Pal Adarsha Sikshayatan, Jadavpur, Kolkata. Subsequently, he completed his B.Sc. from Garia Dinabandhu Andrews College, Kolkata and Post-graduation in Document Examination from Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan National Institute of Criminology & Forensic Science, MHA, Delhi.
He is a Forensic Document Examiner by profession and at present holding the prestigious chair of Director, Document Division, CID, West Bengal - the one and only post in West Bengal.
He was a very naughty boy in his childhood. He was fond of mainly outdoor games like Football, Cricket, Flying Kites, Fishing from ponds etc. He liked to play all day long if he was allowed to. He was always a headache to his mother. Though academic studies was not attractive to him he had a strong obsession for reading Comics, Story books, Rhymes, Fairy tales, Ghost stories etc.
During his adolescence he felt a strong urge to express his feelings through poetry. Perhaps that urge was developed in his subconscious mind due to excessive poetry reading. He wrote a good number of poems but did not dare to send them for publication, lest they were rejected. His poems were kept in dairies for a quite long period.
He wrote his first poem (Nil aakasher deshe / balaka jai vese...) at the age of twelve. That was lost, never published anywhere. His first book ‘Kichu Sadharan Kavita’ (Some Ordinery Poems, 1997) was published at the age of 31.
In the beginning of his literary career he was highly impressed by the works of Sukanta Bhattacharjee. But later the works of Jibananda Das engulfed his poetic entity, and the phase continued for a considerable period. With the passage of time he was attracted to the poetry of Sunil Gangopadhyay, Suvas Mukhopadhyay, Sankho Ghosh, Shamsur Rahaman, Purnendu Patri and above all Rabindra Nath Tagore. In English Shelly, Keats, Yeats, Pablo Neruda, Matthew Arnold etc. were always inspirational for him.
As he was a voracious reader he read a considerable number of prose works of eminent writers e.g. Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay, Bibhuti Bhushan Bandyopadhyay, Abanindranath Thakur, Ashapurna Devi, Tarashankar Bandopadhyay, Shankar, Sunil, Samaresh, Shirshendu etc. At the same time he went through the world classics by Adgar Allan Poe, Jules Verne, Guy De Maupussant, Dale Carnegie, Charles Dickens, Arthur Conan Doyle etc.
BIPLAB MAJUMDAR AS AN EDITOR :
In the year 1999 he started editing a Bengali poetry magazine ‘SAHITYA UTSAV’. At that time the term ‘Globalization’ was in air and being uttered frequently. He created a column in his magazine ‘Kavitar Viswayan’ (Globalization of Poetry), where poems by contemparary poets across the globe were translated into Bengali. Another column ‘Pradeshic Batayane’ (Through the neighbouring window) was introduced in it where poets across India were placed among the poets and readers of Bengal. All these were done to encourage the feelings of mutual respect and brotherhood.
Next year (2000) he started editing an English poetry magazine ‘VOICE OF KOLKATA’, also. Poets of Greece, Italy, USA, Australia, China, Canada, Russia, France, England, Cyprus, Brazil, Spain, Malta, Marocco, Yugoslavia etc. participated in that magazine. He has been editing these two magazines till date. ‘Voice of Kolkata’ has been awarded as ‘The Best Poetry Magazine in India’ from Italy, China, USA and South Africa and Albania.
In the year 2003 he took an inimitable step towards poetry, he tried to preserve the thoughts of the poets from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and from Assam to Gujrat, about their dear motherland on the eve of the celebration of the 50 years of Independence of India. Almost all the major poets of Indo-English poetry took part in it. Poets like, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, D. C. Chambial, Krishna Srinivas, R. K. Singh, Sayeed Ameeruddin, Shiela Gujral (wife of Prime Minister I. K. Gujral) etc. participated at that time.
The book was dedicated to unity, integrity and soliderity of India, and it created great sensasion in the circle of poets. Even the then President of India Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam appreciated him personally through a letter.
Apart from these he has edited a lot of books e.g. Rainbow Rhymes I, II and III (Pub. : Toddler) All about love (Pub. : Aaheli); Prof. Ikeda : The living legend (Pub. : IPSKI); Prof. Svatek : A Genius of Austria (Pub. : IPSKI); Chobite Ramayan, Chobite Mahabharat (Pub. : Dakshabharati); Best Detective Stories, Nirbachita Detective Galpo (Pub. : Mala); Banibitaan (Pub. : Mita Books).
BIPLAB MAJUMDAR AS AN ENGLISH POET :
His first book ‘Kichu Sadharan Kavita’ (Some Ordinary Poems) (1997) (Pub. : Vivekananda Sahitya Kendra, Kolkata) was in his mother tongue, Bengali. The next book was ‘Jhara Bakuler Swapne’ (In the dream of fallen Bakul) (1998) (Pub. : Prapti). The book reflected his artistic soul in full bloom. But when his superb poetry collection ‘VIRTUES & VICES’ (1999) (Pub. : IPSKI; subsequently published by Mainstream Publication, 2011) came to light, the erudite section of literary world got acquainted with his real talent. The book was highly discussed and acclaimed by the leading poets of India and abroad. In one review by Bernard M. Jackson, famous poet and critic of England wrote, “ Biplab is a poet at the very heart of the matter. At no time does he resort to any form of obscurity in his verses; and it should ever be borne in mind that the very essence of genius is to be bound in simplicity, itself............ This is a collection that may be opened at any page, for truly this work, in its entirety, is imbued with an underlying tenderness of spirit, which is the very main-spring of its universal appeal. We need poets like Biplab Majumdar to bridge those gulfs that exist between the major religions of the world.”
In the world of Indian English poetry he became a familiar name. Perhaps he is the most discussed English poet in India. Nearly 100 research papers, 12 books were written on his poetry so far, whereas his actual number of original English poetry collections are only four.
In the year 2013 Pallavi Kiran, a research scholar of Indian School of Mines University, Dhanbad, Jharkhand has done M.Phil. on him : ‘Social Consciousness in the poetry of Biplab Majumdar”. Prof. R. K. Singh was her research guide.
Biplab Majumdar’s poems have been published not only in Bengali and English but also in Assamese, Hindi, Marathi, Punbjabi, Tamil, Telegu, Kannada, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Serbian, Russian, German etc. languages in India, U.K., USA, Greece, Italy, Brazil, Israel, Argentina, Japan, China, Malta, Spain, Yugoslavia, Australia, Romania etc. countries.
For his remarkable contribution to literature he has got more than 60 Awards from different parts of the world. Some of his exceptional Awards are :

He is the founder of ‘International Poetry Society of Kolkata, India’ --- “Global love, peace and brotherhood through poetry and literature” is the mission in his life.
BIPLAB MAJUMDAR AS A TRANSLATOR :
Biplab Majumdar has done yeoman’s service in the field of poetry and prose through translation. Especially the poets of the world consider his works are not only beneficial for the poetry world but also very significant steps towards humanity, fraternity and friendship.
He took great labour in collecting poems from different leading contemporary poets from Greece, Australia, USA, India, Canada etc. countries and translated them into Bengali. Then he persuaded the publishers to publish the anthologies. His ‘Adhunik Greek Kavita’ (Modern Poetry of Greece) (Pub. Shyamali); ‘Adhunik Australian Kavita’ (Modern Poetry of Australia) (Pub. M.C. Sarkar); ‘’American Kavita’ (Poetry of America) (Pub. Mainstream); ‘Bharatbarser Kavita’ (Poetry of India) (Pub. : Aaheli); ‘Canadar Samprotik Kavita’ (Comtemperary Poetry of Canada) (Pub. Ekush Shatak) etc. are considered as the pioneering works in the field of Bengali poetry.
He has translated selected poems of Dr. Kazuyosi Ikeda (Japan), Prof. Kurt F. Svatek (Austria), Miriam Lindberg (Israel) etc. world famous poet personalities.
Not only that he has translated significant amount of prose works, e.g. ‘Alice In Wonderland’ (Pub. : Dakshabharati); ‘King Lear’, ‘Macbeth’, ‘Sherwooder Robinhood’ (Pub. : Kalimata); ‘Rahasya Galpo : Allen Poe’ (Pub. : Mita Books); ‘Shakespearer Galpo’ (Pub. : Urbashi); ‘World’s Best Classics’ (Pub. : Granthamitra); ‘Selected Stories from Shakespears’ (Pub. : Sagnik) etc.
One can easily understand what a huge amount of dedication, involvement, perseverance and willingness to accept hardwork he had exerted in such works. Every educated person can easily realize the value of such works in respect of literature.
BIPLAB MAJUMDAR AS A JUVENILE LITERATOR :
In fact, Biplab Majumdar’s immense contribution to juvenile literature is highly commendable. He has written a lot of books for the little hearts. All of his Rhyme books are for them e.g.

Apart from those he has written ‘Panchatantrer Galpokatha’, ‘Adventure of Sindbad’, ‘Chhotoder Ramayan’, ‘Chhotoder Mahabharat’, ‘Baronia Nari’, ‘Chelebelar Vivekananda’, ‘Acharya Prafullachandra’, ‘Muslim Monishider Jibani’, ‘Jataker Galpo’ etc. lots of books.
But his rare contribution in the field of fairy tales are simply awe-inspiring. He has translated the fairy tales of Greece, Japan, Germany, Austria, Russia, Scotland, Romania, Italy etc. countries which are considered as the first time approach in the realm of Bengali Juvenile literature. His Austrier Rupkatha, Greek Rupkatha, Germanir Rupkatha, Japaner Rupkatha, Russier Rupkatha, Scotlander Rupkatha etc. are some of the examples.
BIPLAB MAJUMDAR : THOUGHTS & VISION
According to Biplab Majumdar, “This is the journey, from here to hereafter, from the everpervasive present to endless eternity.” As a true analyst of happenings surrounding to us he establishes close relationships between man and man, man and nature. His powerful observations, keen concerns about the earthly matters and right expressions coupled with newer thoughts always reveal a world that is exceptionally his own, at the same time of everybody. Here is his universality that is appreciated by the serious poets and scholars.
Jasvinder Singh, noted poet and critic of Delhi, comments on him : “He has been a brand ambassador of contemporary Indo-Anglican literature universally. He is a poet of the world. Without a tinckle of doubt he may be called a poet par excellence, and a poet extraordinary, because his thoughts in his poems leave a resounding impact on the imagination of his readers. He is a noble soul with noble thoughts.”
A lot of poets and researchers repeatedly compared him with the great poets like Robert Frost, Shakespeare, Rabindranath Tagore, Sri Aurobindo, Keats, Wordsworth, Coleridge, P.B, Shelley Milton, Baudelaire, Kamala Das, Nissim Ezekiel etc.
Pallavi Kiran in her M.Phil research on Biplab Majumdar said, “As a humanist, Majumdar comes near to O.P. Bhatnagar for whom the spirit of men is his highest concern.”
Prof. Suresh Chandra Dwivedi, head of the department, English, Allahabad University said, “In Biplab’s poetry there is a tendency to extend empathy and sympathy. His poems are seen across boundaries of cultural and ethical differences. His poems are pro-changers and celebrate the features of hybridity and cultural polyvalency. He develops a new perspective which is wider and larger than other poets and other intellectuals.”
Noted contemporary English poet Dr. Manoranjan Das writes about his works, “Realistically speaking, Biplab Majumdar has the essential imagination with free concept of thought. He argues that imagination in poetry and everywhere, where it finely creative, is a faculty, not quality or quantity; its seat is in the higher reason....”
Biplab Majumdar has written more than 90 books on poetry, prose, rhyme, translation, novels, short stories, essays etc. If all of his works are minutely analysed it will be evident that he is committed to literature as well as our sociaty. The mast lines of the magazines that he edits honorarily viz. Sahitya Utsav and Voice of Kolkata are glaring examples of his thoughts.
We get the true picture of his life and philosophy when he says in an interview, “From the depth of my heart I think of the welfare of common people, for the betterment of human relations. These may be my humble contribution, but I firmly believe in the innate goodness, honesty and ethical values of human beings that emanate from out of centuries old civilization and culture. Through my thoughts, deeds and creativity I work incessently for international understanding, cooperation and endeavour to spread the message of goodwill, peace and brotherhood.”
Biplab Majumdar is a versatile creative talent and a dedicated person to literature as well as society. His literary genius and selfless service to mankind are certainly commendable and will be remembered with high esteem and gratitude by the world.
